Bridging the gap
The Pupil Premium is an amount of money which is added to the school’s overall budget so that we can support disadvantaged pupils. In making provision for socially disadvantaged pupils, we recognise that not all pupils who receive free school meals will be socially disadvantaged. We also recognise that not all pupils who are socially disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals. Accordingly, we reserve the right to allocate the Pupil Premium funding to support any pupil, or groups of pupils, the school has legitimately identified as being socially disadvantaged. Furthermore, as our resources are limited, not all children receiving free school meals will be in receipt of pupil premium interventions at one time.
At Howden Church of England Infant School this funding is used to:
- Ensure that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all pupils
- The attainment of socially disadvantaged pupils are monitored assessed by the School’s Leadership and by individual class teachers
- Make appropriate provision for socially disadvantaged pupils so that they achieve at or above age related expectations
- The provision made for disadvantaged pupils may include:
- Reducing group sizes
- Providing individual work with an experienced teacher assistant or volunteer teacher, focussed on overcoming gaps in learning
- Additional teaching and learning opportunities provided through learning mentors, trained TAs, pastoral care or external agencies, One to One Tuition, Reading Recovery, additional homework, additional classes.

Free School Meals - New Eligibility Changes
Free School Meal Eligibility changes
From the start of the 2026 to 2027 academic year, the DfE are expanding FSM eligibility to all children from households in receipt of Universal Credit regardless of household earnings. Free school meals are available to pupils in receipt of, or whose parents are in receipt of, one or more of the following benefits:
- Universal Credit
- support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
A pupil is only eligible to receive a free school meal where both:
- a claim for this support has been made
- their eligibility has been verified by the school where they are enrolled or by the local authority
Households may also be entitled to a meal if they:
- are in receipt of income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- receive the guaranteed element of Pension Credit
- meet criteria set out in separate guidance for families with no recourse to public funds
All current FSM eligibility is to be re-assessed in line with the above criteria by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council. If the claim does not meet the criteria, the ability to claim a free school meal will expire at the end of the current academic year. The LA will inform families who are no longer eligible. From 1st September 2026, only families that have the above listed benefits will be eligible.
